From the Headlines

(a response to Sandy Hook, CT)

Some moments are too horrible
for words, too harsh for poetry,
and death is safe in a poem,

cornered in meter and rhyme,
an image of a rose whose thorn draws blood
from the tender, gloved, hand

of the woman who nurtured the buds,
sustained life, protected from storms,
bullies, the leaches that suck vitality

and leave us all dry and with
that question,
staring blankly back . . .
